January 2004 - Need Some Dough?
I just
happened to check our bread pantry (actually the big bottom
drawer under the kitchen counter) on Sunday and noticed we
were out of bread. One rather lonely near-to-stale pita was hanging
out in among the crackers and a bag of rippled Lay's chips. Normally
this wouldn't be a disaster, easily remedied by grocery shopping...but
I just wasn't feeling up to it, and S. does love his bread.
I lugged
out my trusty breadmaker and within a few short hours I had made
a delicous smelling, wonderfully tasting soft, fresh, hot loaf of
Seven Grain Bran Bread.
Yum. It was so delectable that I had to try it when it emerged from
the oven, with a small amount of butter and peanut butter. Oooooh,
delicious. I even had another piece later, completely naked (the
bread, not me...) and yet another a few seconds later with
some really thinly sliced cheddar cheese. Delish!
Yes,
I used my breadmaker, so lets hear the groans from the peanut gallery
about how it's not quite "homemade"...please. Who wants
to spend an hour kneading bread dough when one can be relaxing on
the couch with a cup of peppermint tea and reading a good book?
Honestly, when a machine can do that particular job for you and
come up with the same if not better results then when you do it
yourself, why not use the machine?!?
When
the dough cycle was complete I removed it the machine, allowed it
to rise again in a buttered bowl and then put it in a loaf pan,
bake it and voila! The perfect loaf of bread.
