2007-07-24: shf roundup 2 - the sweetest thing

It's been almost a couple of weeks since the Domestic Goddess posted the first half of her roundup for Sugar High Friday: The Sweetest Thing. Unfortunately, Jennifer is still languishing sick in the hospital, and so in her place, her husband S. is here to (quite belatedly) finish off what she started so long ago. Enjoy it, everyone, and please accept our apologies for the tardiness.

(If anyone's SHF entry was missed in this or the last roundup, please do drop me a line and I will add you promptly.)

We start off today with Nora from Life's Smorgasbord who gvies us her's Mom's Sugee, a traditional treat from Singapore. It's a gorgeously creamy blend of semolina, whole milk and cardamom.

Stephanie from the romantically-titled Cupcake, My Love has given in to her chocolate cravings with this peppy Nutter Butter Chocolate Pudding Pie. It's one of those desserts where you just have to say, Yes, I'm going to use gratuitous amounts of Cool Whip and I don't care what anyone thinks!

Rose from 64 Sq Ft Kitchen has come up with a lovely plain Flan, a criminally forgotten dessert in North America. I was once on a trip to Egypt and my hotel had a mealtime buffet--and every day at lunch and dinnertime they had large plates of jiggly flans available. I was there for a whole week and I couldn't resist having flan every single day.

Soula from My Champagne Dreams was on the same wavelength as Rose when she came up with her Creme Caramel. It's richer due to the use of cream rather than milk, and has a very pleasant extra bit of blondeness to it.

Nicole from Audaciousness is busy building an orphanage in Nicaragua, and yet still found time to make some American Cookies, San Jorge Style. They started out as chocolate chip cookies, but Nicole had to do some clever substitutions and ended up with hard Dulce de Leche candies and a Snickers bar in them instead.

Nicisme from Cherrapeno whipped up a delectable Caramel Tiramisu. I'm frankly not sure how you could recover from this dessert. Just looking down the list of key ingredients (mascarpone caramel cream, butterscotch chocolate, coffee and Tia Maria sponge cake, and cocoa powder) has my palate completely exhausted from all those backflips it started to do.

Ley from Cilantro and Lime is in her words, a "very new blogger" and was wondering whether it was "possible for her " to join the SHF fun. The answer is: Of course you are! (Heck, even if you are among the 10-15 remaining people in the world who don't have a blog, you are allowed!) And Ley made a very nice entry into the even with her simple Vanilla Cupcakes with Honey Frosting.

KJ from A Crackling Good Egg picked a delicious Chocolate Cherry Ice Cream Sundae to make for SHF, which was his craving at exactly 7.38pm on 10 June 2007. This is a person with cravings that need to be updated not just by the day, but by the minute.

Priyanka from Lajawab adds her name to the list of worldwide tiramisu admirers, checking in with her version of Quick and Easy Tiramisu, a version that is both egg- and alcohol-free.

Helen from Tartelette traveled back to her childhood with her grandmother and brought back, appropriate enough, an Apricot Tart. Looks warm and beautiful.

Kate from A Way to Eat has created a Rhubarb Custard Tart that looks like just the perfect dessert for evenings in the countryside. Amazing colours in the picture also.

Eva from Sweet Sins presents a picturesque Vanilla Custard, a dessert she made for the very first time without the assistance of her mother's paper custard packages. The funny thing is that Eva fretted about missing the SHF deadline in her entry. If only she knew that she'd end up being almost three weeks too early by the time the roundup was written and posted...

As soon as Brooke from Bear Necessities was prompted for a craving, she knew right away that she had to make an Apple Crumble with Caramel Sauce. It was her first time making a crumble on her own, and from the looks of it, it won't be the last.

Brilynn from Jumbo Empanadas offers her Bri's Team Cookie Ice Cream, an ice cream inspired by her popular Team Cookies. Each scoop looks like a melted chocolate chip cookie. So awesome.

Devra from Puu's Cookbook made Strawberry Profiteroles, thus culminating a love affair with the delicate French treat that started when she was a young 17-year old in a Parisian brasserie.

Sheena from The Casual Baker thought hard on what she craves and decided it had to include both chocolate and red fruit, naturally bringing her to make Red Currant Fudge Pudding Cakes. I know this sounds a bit odd, but these beauties look so good I seriously just wondered what it would be like to take a swim in one of them. (Seriously.)

Laura Rebecca from Laura Rebecca's Kitchen revisits an old flame of hers, the legendary pairing of chocolate and peanut butter, in creating her eye-catching Ooey-Gooey Peanut Butter-Chocolate Brownies. Sagely, however, Laura Rebecca selected a lighter recipe for this dessert. Which is great, 'cause that means I can have more of them, right?

Kevin from Closet Cooking grapples with the difference between what a favorite dessert tastes like and his memory of how it should taste like. Ah, don't we all? In his case, the dessert is the smooth and hearty White Chocolate Chunk and Macadamia Nut Cookies.

Anh from Food Lover's Journal is desperately in love with a cheesecake. This might sound bad, until you take a peek at her enchanting Black Sesame Cottony Cheesecake.

Mandy from Fresh From the Oven makes her SHF debut with a lively, fruity Pavlova, a Christmas morning treat from her childhood with family and one of the few non-chocolatey items she craves. The light, refreshing fruit combined with the smoothness of the meringue is just heavenly.

VF from Virtual Frolic says that for her ice-cream is a daily craving that she has to fulfil, and so she took off from there, creating a Strawberry Sorbet. Absolutely perfect for summer.

Inne from Vanille & Chocolat has an unusual craving that she had never made herself before, this very neat and appetizing Passionfruit Souffle. As she points out herself, this is highly unusual, a Belgian who unashamedly forgoes chocolate entirely!

Jacky from Wildfoodie Diary wows us with her Wild Cherry Cheesecakelets. Fantastic presentation and you could just picture the wonderful tartness this dessert would have.

Courtney from The Dough Ball knew that chocolate is her all-time craving, but wanted to do something different. So she ended up with Pesto Truffles. Yes, chocolate truffles rolled together with basil and pine nut crumbs. This is by far the most intriguing dessert I've seen yet.

Susan from The Well-Seasoned Cook impresses with a version of her late grandmother's sweet and luscious Maple Walnut Cake. A craving that is rooted in a rich memory, like so many others on this list.

Jacqueline from White was so excited to participate in her first SHF in particular because of the theme of cravings. She could not keep away from the big C, coming up with a simple and tasty Flourless Chocolate Cake.

GV from Add Flavour has created an Amras, an Indian dessert comprised of the pulp extracted from mangos. I've never had this, but if it's anything like a mango lassi, then sign me up!

And finally, Jenny from All Things Edible brings a delightful Rhubarb Cobbler to our craving party. This was particularly nice of Jenny, because she made it with the hospitalized Domestic Goddess in mind. I know she wishes she could have a slice right now... instead I think there might be some more Jello in a plastic cup waiting on her tray.
