May 2004 - Thanks, Mom
Sometimes
you just need a little tenderness. A warm hug on a cold day. A pat
on the back or a smile, at the exact right moment can make or break
a good or a bad day in a single second. Moms alone seem to have
the ability to exude this special form of, mixed with love, devotion
and a hint of warmth and tenderness that we all need from time to
time.
But
where do you get it when you are no longer twelve and able to snuggle
up on the sofa with your mom and get her to read to you? What do
you do when you've had a rough day at work or a fight with a friend
or just "one of those days"? You head to the recipes she
gave you. The ones that were her stand-by's in these situations.
The ones that smell the same every time you make them, that have
that mom imprint on their taste and just allow you to take the time
to make and enjoy them while calming yourself and not worrying about
whatever it was that made you feel this way.
For
me there are a few recipes like that -- my comfort
food. I usually only indulge in things like that when I'm sick
and my mom actually has made them and brought them to me. Of course,
not living with my mom makes this a bit more difficult, so now and
then when I've had a bad day and need to feel the comfort of a mom's
hug, the recipe I most often turn to would be her absolutely outstanding
Cream of Broccoli Soup.
It's a mom-specialty in that it takes little work, uses whatever
vegetables are left-over in the fridge, smells divine, makes a large
enough quantity to share and have left-over's for lunch the next
day and is absolutely delicious.
Thanks,
mom.
