May 2004 - Like a Moth to a Flame
Am
I a kitchen accessory slut?
Give
me a kitchen accessory, dish, platter, glassware, utensil...and
I glow. Put me in a Williams-Sonoma,
Pottery
Barn, Golda's or
Cayne's and I light up
like a school girl after her first kiss. Allow me to wander through
dusty stores settled in, one next to the other on a busy street
in China town, full to the brim with fantastic and strange gadgets...some
of which I have never seen and will never understand how to use...and
I...well...you get the picture.
My
kitchen is already full of things like cake platters, trays and
dishes. The drawers burst with mezzalunas and graters. There are
cutlery holders on the counter holding cake decorating tools, spatulas
and ladles. Cookbooks are taking shelf space as are binders stuffed
with recipes and lists of ingredients I want to buy when I have
the opportunity. My kitchen is my sanctuary; it is where I go when
I want coffee, when I want comfort, when I need to cook or bake.
Turning
on the oven, hearing the whoosh of gas rush in to heat it up gives
me shivers. Opening the fridge and seeing a carton of buttermilk,
a tupperware full of feta and a crisper stuffed with ingredients
like Asian eggplant, mango and rapini sends waves of happiness through
me. Preparing and then serving my own dishes or desserts forces
a sense of such intense pride within me -- especially when something
I have created with my own hands is enjoyed and complimented upon.
Does
this make me a kitchen accessory slut? Does it? Perhaps...
I
added a few more desirable items to my lusting
page...just a snippet of what I wish could be forcing me to find
more room for in my already full kitchen. It was while I was wandering
though Williams-Sonoma online that I found a recipe for Banana
Creme Brulee. And using my father's kindly donated
propane torch we had a lovely, creamy, banana-y dessert. I've become
addicted to this torch...I doubt my father is going to get it back...I
don't know how happy he must be to have added this gadget to my
ever-growing collection.
