May 2004 - Back on the Cake Treadmill
It
seems as though I can no longer allow a weekend to pass by without
filling my belly (and everyone else’s around me)
with some delectable dessert. Recently, having veered off the cake
course (at my mother’s request) I delved into mini
bundt cakes and mini banoffee pies (probably hoping that they’re
being mini might make them less filling). Both of which were
delicious, but certainly not cake…well, the bundt cakes were,
but they weren’t iced with delicate flowers or intricate swirls,
so they don’t count in my twisted brain.
This
weekend, I got back on the cake treadmill (not quite as good
for you as a regular treadmill) and spent Friday afternoon
getting to know Deb’s
CakeWalk
Submission: The
Freckled Mocha Cake. I had been itching to try this
recipe for a few weeks, and was very happy with how simple it was
to make. It turned out to be a good cake (not one I particularly
loved, but everyone else certainly did – my mother went so
far as to say it was the best yet), with a nice crumb, light
and not too buttery or sweet. It did have a definite coffee flavour
to it (which S. diagnosed as tasting like peanutbutter for some
reason), and would have gone rather nicely yesterday with my
morning cup of that particular bittersweet beverage, but I was caked,
carbed, fooded and full-stomached out by then. In fact, there is
surprisingly a large chunk of it still on our kitchen table…wondering
to itself, “why oh why doesn’t anyone love me?”.
I did reassure it this morning before I left the house that we did
in fact love it, and that S. would undoubtedly snag it and love
it tenderly after his softball game this evening.
After
dinner on Saturdays, the usual drill is to clear the table, allowing
my brother to bring his camera and lighting kit up so he can photograph
my dessert donation. This weekend everyone was too tired (not
sure why), too grumpy and obviously much too in need of cake
immediately to allow this sort of delay. After most of the cake
had been scarfed down I managed to save one nice looking slice to
be it’s own star in this weekend’s photo shoot. I ended
up liking one picture in particular so much that I used it as my
new “logo”.
Oh,
and did you happen to notice the new-ish design? Check out the About
page…there’s even a picture of me (and no, I don't always
look that angry).
