March 2004 - Dinner with An Asian Flair
Today
was my day off from work (I love days off now that I am actually
working again) and I spent most of it cleaning the apartment
and trying to make marzipan turn black without black food colouring.
Don't ask...really. But if you simply must know, it is
for the cake I'm going to make for my dad for his birthday this
weekend. I thought a marzipan black lab would be a nice added touch.
Let's hope it works out!
Anyway,
by the time S. got home from work (and drove me to the library
to drop off a rather large load of cookbooks I had borrowed a few
weeks ago) I was pretty tired. Though, needless to say I did
want to actually cook something so that I could have another entry
-- an entry that didn't include cake, that is.
S.
was also willing to help me out and he came up with the idea of
making the veggies for the side-dish. Since I was making Wasabi-Crusted
Chicken for dinner he thought it would be nice to have Tempura
Vegetables, which I thought would be a perfect side-dish. He
set out everything I needed for the chicken and and cut up the veggies
while I rested for a little while more on the couch, watching Oprah...ah,
that is the life!
Dinner
was pretty good -- Anglicized food with an Asian-flair, I think...but
not all that Asian, to be honest. The chicken was good, but hardly
qualified as Japanese, even with the Wasabi-powder and breadcrumb
coating. THe veggies were quite good, although I think mostly what
they caused was a severe craving for sushi...oh well...better luck
next time, hmm?
