March 2004 - Let Them Eat Cake!
Saturdays
seem to evolved into "Cake Day" recently. It is usually
our grocery shopping day, usually the day S. and I go to my parents'
house for dinner and over the past few weeks has become the day
when I bake and decorate a cake...working towards the slightly more
extravagant as I go along, I'm hoping.
On
Friday when I was there doing our laundry (yes, I do our laundry
at my parents' house every week) I took a poll on what kind
of cake people were in the mood for the next evening after dinner.
My older brother David requested white cake and everyone seemed
happy with that. Knowing that I still had some ganache
in the fridge from the last
cake I made I figured a white cake with preserve between the
layers and a pure chocolate icing (with royal icing embellishments,
of course!) would work out well.
Since
I still had buttermilk and it hadn't gone off yet, and I always
have eggwhites, I thought a recipe for Buttermilk
White Cake that I had hanging around (with no idea where
it originally came from) would be a good choice. It turned
out nicely, I think; the cake tasted pretty good too, and looked
rather elegant -- perhaps not as elegant as the poured ganache icing
had last time, but attractive nonetheless.
This weekend I am making a cake for my dad's birthday
-- my mom steered me towards what she is certain is his favourite
kind of cake, so I'll make it on Saturday morning. Also, I learned
how to do marzipan figurines in my cake decorating class on Monday,
so I think I'll try to make a black lab to put on top of it. Stay
tuned to see the results!
