March 2004 - Coffee-Time Snacks
As
I mentioned in an earlier entry, S.'s writing group was over on
Wednesday evening, and I thought they might be a little peckish,
so I decided to relax in my kitchen that afternoon. It was nice,
because I'd started a new job on Monday and I hadn't cooked or baked
since Saturday (when S. and I made dinner for my parents...maybe
more about that later). So by Wednesday I was sort of going
into a withdrawal and was missing my kitchen and baking just seemed
like the proper thing to do.
I had
bought buttermilk on Saturday during our slightly over-sized grocery
trip and really wanted to use it, so when I came across a recipe
on Epicurious.com for buttermilk-molasses
gingerbread I snapped it up and made a run for the kitchen on
Wednesday morning. It was extremely simple to make and made the
kitchen smell divine. I left it to cool on a rack on the counter
and went out to run some errands.
Of
course, upon returning home I just couldn't fathom not having some
sort of variety to offer to these guests I'd never met, so cookies
were definitely in order. I was kind of counting on them wanting
coffee -- don't all writers (myself included) drink coffee?
Turns out no...BUT at the time I thought they would, and what goes
better with coffee (other than chocolate) than peanut butter?
So, peanut butter cookies
it was. Another easy-to-make recipe that I've had on hand for years
and probably only made once before.
Everything
was great, but the writing group wasn't that interested. One person
didn't even like baked goods (if you can believe that!)...but,
you know what that means...left-overs for S. and I. And you can
bet I had gingerbread for breakfast with my coffee yesterday before
work. Yum.
