January 2004 - Do Real Men Eat Quiche?
My
boyfriend S. had never tried quiche...I'm
sure there is a Middle-Eastern equivalent but it's not served in
the same way. I think I'll have to ask him to try to get this similar
recipe from his mom and I'll try it next time. Although he did rather
enjoy the quiche that I made recently; as did I. So it turns out
that real men do indeed eat quiche. Yay!
The
only thing about it I didn't enjoy was the pastry, unfortunately.
Again, not as good as my mom's, but it had a similar taste to it
and reminded me of why I rarely liked the quiche my mom made when
I was living at home. I never realised what it was until I made
it myself; something about cooking it yourself you notice what tastes
like what and where you went wrong...sometimes.The pastry had way
too much butter in it for my palate -- maybe it was the shortening
though. I'm not sure, next time I guess I'll have to hunt down a
good pastry recipe with not too much butter in it, I suppose.
It's
odd though because I love shortbread (I hear some calling my
name at this moment from the kitchen actually) and pie crust
has the same amount of butter in it and it never bothers me. Perhaps
it's something to do with cooking the egg in the pastry. I have
no idea. I'll make another one on the weekend maybe (perhaps
with eggwhites only so it's a bit less fattening?) and try
a new pastry recipe. I'll keep you posted.
