18 April 2004 - Is My Blog Burning? aka: "Cake Walk"

Not that I need another excuse to bake a cake.

When Derrick mentioned the newest IMBB? "event" I couldn't help but get a little excited. He directed me to Renee's description of the Is My Blog Burning? Cake Walk and I was instantly hooked. I had already forged the tradition within my family of presenting them with a cake every Saturday evening...why not push it to Sunday and participate in this burgeoning web-version of a bake sale??

A valuable lesson learned: never put off to Sunday what you could easily have done on Saturday. Even though I didn't want to head over to my parents place until Sunday with the actual cake, I could easily have typed this entry on Saturday. I could have very easily made the chocolate ganache filling on Saturday. I could have even practiced the design a bit on Saturday. No. Of course I didn't do any of these things. I did however, bake the cake on Saturday, saving me from hours of grueling oven-watching and nail biting, trying to decide when the cake was in fact done on Sunday. At least I managed to think that far ahead...

Of course, making it for yesterday would have meant that I wouldn't be sitting here, staring at said cake, smelling the icing, wondering when my brother is going to get back from his softball team/pub-meet and take pictures of it. Making it yesterday would have meant that I could have relaxed this morning instead of being ever-so-slightly flustered when things didn't look as perfect as I had hoped and I had run out of time for S. and I to leave to get to my parents (because S. is now with my brother at said softball pub-meet).

Okay, now I am going to breathe for possibly the second time today.

Anyway, I did it. It's done. I made a White Butter Cake from a recipe that I tweaked just a little (I can't seem to help it), filled in between the layers with whipped chocolate ganache and covered it with Italian Meringe Buttercream. A sugar and butter heaven, to be sure. And it looks pretty good -- not quite up to my standards because my hands were way too shaky today (I blame it on the lethal combination of coffee, no breakfast, too many finger licks of ganache and icing (I had to clean them!) and not nearly enough sleep lately)...oh well. I did get a compliment when I was waiting for S. to pull the car around and there was someone from the building next door outside...him and his girlfriend thought that it was very beautiful. Well, let's just hope it tastes good, too! (It did! Quite good, actually.)
